Will the World Last Another Century?

By Lateef Oladeji of Gem Business Ventures

Can this world last another 100 years? What a question! Answers to this difficult question will vary from person to person, depending on their believes, religious or mundane.

For instance, a Christian would answer that the signs are already here of the end of this world. Yes, the odd signs are here for us to observe - harsh climate change, frequent natural disasters, constant perversion of values, religious and power-tuzzle wars, crazy suicide bombings and attacks, fake prophethood, demise of love for the neighbour, environmental pollution, food and potable water shortage, escalating oil prices, etc. With all these, who would venture an optimism that this world would last another century?

However, was it not mentioned in the same Christian Bible about "the world without end"? If the world would have no end, then the coming again of Christ would just be to do a reform job, not to superintend over the demise of the world.

Now, looking at the mundane angle to this argument, some people, including myself, would believe that all the efforts now being made by the space scientists and astronauts will yield the effect of prolonging the life of the world by creating alternative places of abode even if the present earth becomes overstressed or otherwise less habitable. Moreover, the efforts of the environmentalists too are a right step in the right direction to halt or reduce the tempo of degradation that has posed a big threat to human survival.

In summary, I am among those that believe that this world will never end, but will constantly experience changes and threats as a result of abuse by humans, who in turn will learn to reform or adapt, out of an instinct of self preservation.
