Urgent Need to Tackle Global Youth Unemployment

By Lateef Oladeji of Gem Business Ventures

Daily lamentations over the lack of jobs for highly qualified people are becoming high-pitched. The problem of unemployment affecting skilled and educated people all over the world is getting widespread by the day. Indeed, the advanced western countries are not left out of it; some of them are even moving towards two-digit unemployment rates.

However, when it is realized that youths form the bulk of the global unemployed, one deserves to feel jittery. Several young graduates don't find any jobs to do at all. A large number of them don't find the ones that suit their qualifications. For instance, in some African countries, a good number of university and polytechnic graduates ride commercial motorcycles while some of them work as labourers at building sites in a bid to “keep body and soul together”. The bad and daring ones among them join crimes, including armed robbery!

Who or what is to blame? Increasing costs and prices due to escalating oil prices have depressed demand worldwide, leading to cut-downs in production and labour. Whatever happens in the advanced industrialized world will quickly spread to the less developed ones like Philippines and Nigeria. That is the effect of countries being interdependent.

Corruption in developing economies is another big cause of unemployment in those countries. Corruption stunts development and depresses capacities for generating employment opportunities.

It is also important to cite the problem of inappropriate curricula in schools and colleges as leading to unemployment among school leavers and college/university graduates. Greater emphasis needs to be given to science and technology in school curricula to make graduates fit in better for employment in the modern industries or create jobs for themselves and be self-employed.

One peculiar cause of graduate unemployment in Nigeria, for instance, has to do with the older workers using various tactics to perpetuate themselves in active service, thus denying the younger people of the opportunity of finding jobs to do.

Whatever they may be, it is my hope that the factors responsible for graduate unemployment will be seriously tackled so as to prevent violent social upheavals. The hungry man is an angry man. Moreover, the devil finds a job for the idle hands. What is currently happening in the Niger Delta of Nigeria is a lesson to learn from. It is a perfect example of youth unemployment giving rise to youth militancy and disruptions to prosperity and peace. There can hardly be any world peace or prosperity when the youths are not at peace. Causing, promoting or ignoring youth unemployment is 'bidding good bye' to peace. Let us do something fast!
