The Post Office: Going, Going, Going?

I still remember vividly how important the post office was to our lives in my younger days. Almost all things having to do with life and living had a link to the post office. It was such an indispensable institution for communication then. Not any more!

I had the greatest shock of my life today when I asked my 22-year old final-year undergraduate daughter to post some letters for me. She was looking at me confused initially, but later asked me to bring the key to my post office box. She had meant to drop the letters there! My perplexed reaction further compounded her own confusion. I could never have believed that she had never posted a letter before.

My daughter can't be alone in this ignorance about and non-use of the post office. Most of her contemporaries would be in the same boat. Their own generation is a digital one. Moreover, the various courier services have almost taken over most of the services that the post office used to render in an exclusive capacity. Can we then blame our new generation children for being so post-office illiterate?

While the cyber cafes played a big role in rendering the post office less significant in the mid to late 90s and up to a few years ago, they themselves are also entering their own twilight phase at present. (No) thanks to the WiFi system, cheaper internet connections for homes and small offices, etc. Indeed, the final nails to the coffin of cyber cafes are being hammered in place by the now ubiquitous mobile phones, with text, audio and video facilities.

However, like the legendary cat with multiple lives, the post office has refused to die totally. Not all transactions can be concluded digitally. We still have the need to move items and parcels physically, and this need grows daily as the economy gets more sophisticated. Therefore, the real survival battle that the post office has to fight is not with the digital gadgets but with the private courier service industry. There lies the true key to its continued survival in the era of digitalization.
