"Stupid" Desperation

Self-preservation is a natural trait exhibited by all living things. Unfortunately, some people or other living things do the unthinkable to preserve their lives, pride, safety, freedom and other things dear to them.

For instance, there is hardly anything a criminal cannot do to cover his tracks or destroy evidences, depending on the gravity of and punishment for the crimes. As most of these self-preservation actions are taken in desperation, there is little wonder that such actions look mostly stupid or wantonly unthinkable. To the criminal who feels the intense heat of being caught, and fears the consequences, any lesser evil by his reckoning is a candidate of choice.

A new groom may look stupid for committing suicide on his wedding day in order to avoid the shame of his impotent manhood being discovered. To us not wearing his pinching shoes, he must have been stupid or insane. However, if we found ourselves in the same situation, most of us would have taken the same stupid or insane action. Only a few of us would reason out wisely and see no shame in such a situation that matches or surpasses death in intensity. Afterall, time can heal or mitigate the pain of any injured pride. Moreover, shame is reversible but death is not.

To further bring out the practical "stupidity" of desperation, consider a criminal who blindly dashed across a busy highway in an effort to escape from the chasing police, or the one that jumped from the bridge into a freezing river several meters down! Desperation and impulse go together. Most of the time, actions taken out of them look stupid or insane. Poor desperate, impulsive actor! He might not have the luxury of time to weigh his escape options.

Contributor's Note

This piece was inspired by the story I read about a criminal who chewed off or burnt his fingerprints to escape being identified by the police.
