My Plaque, My Life.

Sitting conspicuously on a cupboard across from my desk in my office is a plaque. With its arrow-head top steeply pointing to the ceiling, it gives an impression of urging me on to reach for the sky. On its glossy reflective background is written: “Presented to Mr. Oladeji, L. G. in recognition of his contribution as BEST STAFF of Research Department in 1998”. It had arrived in 1999 with an official covering letter, which informed me that a monetary token of 25,000 Nigerian naira had been granted into the bargain! This highly prized object has constituted my source of pride, inspiration and fulfillment since then. It has become my life. Each time I behold this invaluable ornamental object, I marvel at how the award came my way. I was in the outstation of my department at the time I received it. For an outstation staff member to have won a department-wide award like this was a near miracle. How did I deserve such an honour? Honestly, it keeps baffling me up to now, considering the conglomeration of high-performing and well qualified professionals in my department, both in the head office and at the other sister outstations. However, I remember that I had always been appraised highly by my supervisors in the areas of hardwork, dedication to duty, job accomplishment, job quality and team spirit, among others. Whatever the combination of factors that produced it, the award represents a great symbol of recognition and fulfillment for me. Indeed, it has truly made me fit to say, especially now in retirement, that “I came, I saw and I conquered”. I will forever cherish it.
