Kudos to the Traditional Miracle Workers
By Lateef Oladeji of Gem Business Ventures
The traditional priests, men and women, had existed long before the arrival of the religions of civilization – Christianity and Islam. They had served the spiritual needs of our communities with dexterity and faithfulness. They had been our own messengers of the gods, the latter (the gods) being widely believed to be agents of the Supreme Being, Olodumare. They talked to the gods and the gods talked to them. We loved and revered them. That was then. Colonialism, “civilization” and modern religions have come to push them aside, and even branded their acts as barbaric, satanic and backward. However, a recent event in my locality reawakened my consciousness to the continued presence of the local priests and their positive roles in the society. They still perform miracles as much as in the past, even beyond the levels exhibited within the contexts of the modern religions. Unfortunately, most of the miracles go unpublicized because of the fear by the beneficiaries of being tagged satanic adherents. Much less wonderful performances under the cover of the so-called civilized religions make headlines. A couple had been married for almost 10 years without any child. They had become regular visitors to Western hospitals and laboratories, coming back with conflicting medical reports and advice. They had visited innumerable Christian and Islamic spiritual practitioners for divine intervention without any success. They themselves had prayed and fasted unceasingly to no avail. They had wasted plenty of money in the process. Then, a strange and a rather “insulting” piece of advice came from a casual friend to this couple of very strong bias to modern religions, to give the traditional priests a chance to look into its problem. Reluctantly, the couple gave the advice a try after an initial period of anger, unbelief and procrastination. The traditional priest highlighted the sources of their problems, asked them to observe certain simple things and refrain from doing certain others. About 9 months later, the wife was delivered of a bouncing set of twins. I was there at the naming ceremony where everybody jubilated with, and praised God for, them. I think I need to explain the cause for my new excitement over the local priests. I understand that the one in question is noted for a success rate of almost 100%! How wonderful! However, I got a bit disenchanted and scared when I learnt that he/she charges very high for his/her services. Most probably, the economy of the gods has been monetized in tune with civilization. No monkeys anymore!

I hear many such anecdotes. Undoubtedly shamans, witch doctors, and the like continue to play a significant role in the societies of many countries. Modern medicine is only a few hundred years old, whereas these guys have been in business for thousands of years! So it is not surprising that they have some secrets yet to be uncovered by modern medicine.

Yes, they have some secrets that need to be uncovered. Unfortunately, they most probably will all die with the secrets since their children are too "modern and religious" to show any interest in their "fetish business". How I wish such secrets could be documented and published for use by any interested persons.
