God's Calling Really?
By Lateef Oladeji
My country, Nigeria, was a very peaceful and homely place in my growing-up years in the late fifties to mid sixties. Then, social and infrastructural facilities (roads, water, electricity, hospitals, schools, railways, etc) were working efficiently. Unemployment problem was minimal or almost non-existent, and poverty was not as widespread and pronounced. Honesty and integrity were the hallmarks of the society at that time. Indeed, local retailers of various items could simply "go auto" and miss no heartbeat over the possibility of any loss of wares or money. Going auto then involved sellers leaving their wares unattended. Once there was a clear indication about the prices of the items on display, buyers would serve themselves and leave the appropriate amount of money behind, and no thieves would tamper with it! This attribute remained largely even till the late seventies. It is curious that we had fewer churches/denominations and mosques at this saner time. There were even no cases of inter-religious or inter-tribal riots, as everybody was happy with his/her neighbour irrespective of religion or tribe. With the emergence of economic problems since the early eighties, churches, mosques and religious denominations have mushroomed substantially. Now, every other house has become a house of worship. It is not our population explosion that accounts for this; it is "God's calling" as they make us believe. God's calling is the excuse people use to break away from their original denomination or congregation to form their own. One thing is observable about this ugly development. God's calling is actually an economic calling. Pervasive poverty has made people seek God's miracles in the ever-growing houses of God. The ministers of God and their congregations now emphasize miracles at the expense of true worship. With some scam miracles here and there, the ministers of God grow wealthy while their so-called miracle beneficiaries and miracle seekers get poorer. No wonder the poor are getting poorer in Nigeria. Unfortunately, the multiplicity of houses of worship has not translated into a more pious and prosperous society. Unemployment, crimes, poverty, inter-religious and inter-ethnic wars, vote rigging and a host of other vices have multiplied tremendously just as the houses of worship and their overseers have done. God's calling indeed! |

I agree in the sense of those who announce "God's calling" - when I hear lips announcing their attachment to God; I automatically sprint into a "spiritual run" - just as I do from those who announce they are "Christians" or "performing the Lord's work" -- verbal announcement is not necessary for the energy of spiritual beings is automatically detected and recognized by his/her work. They do not have to announce their good works because those who have received blessings does this for them.

Thank you, JazLive, for your comments. Religions, unfortunately, have become a 'butter and bread' affair in my country and elsewhere on the globe. We have had cases of simulated miracles and pre-arranged testimonies. Some people even suppose that certain 'men of God' use some demonic powers to plant a problem on, and claim later to remove it by miracle from, whoever is unfortunate to go near them either as members or consulters. I believe that there are some true miracle workers, chosen and called by God, but the wolves in sheep's clothing have come to drown their presence and impacts. God is really patient and kind!
