God is Never Angry
By Lateef Oladeji of Gem Business Ventures
Anger is an extreme or passionate displeasure. So, to be angry is to feel extremely or passionately displeased towards another person or thing (or a group of each of them), and even towards oneself. Feeling displeased towards a non-living thing is as commonplace as getting angry with humans and animals. Thus, people constantly get angry at the weather or traffic as much and as often as they do with animate objects. However, while anger towards animate objects, in most cases, relate directly to the objects concerned, that towards inanimate objects virtually invariably is a transferred or indirect type. For instance, the anger towards the weather or traffic is a transferred one, being shifted from whoever or whatever caused them to occur. Perhaps the most notable exception was when Jesus Christ made the fig tree the direct object of his anger, as related in the Bible. But then, he knew better why he did so. From the points of view of spirituality and religion, anger is a sin, and should be avoided as much as possible. It is a negative feeling that stands in the way of spiritual development. While the holy books recognize the unavoidability of anger in humans, they all the same admonish us against falling prey to it often and for a long duration. The medical science too has found anger to be inimical to the mental and physical wellbeing of its host. Indeed, anger is an important factor in the problems of high blood pressure and hypertension. In inter-personal and corporate relations as well, anger has been known to have serious and regrettable consequences, including hate, wars, anguish and terrible sufferings. By inference, and recalling from experience, anger is a tormentor to its host. It drains its host of peace, happiness and general wellbeing. Can we then say that God is also subject to anger (i.e. subject to sins and discomforts) as most religionists claim? If God also got angry, would he not be in a state of anger at all times, considering the fact that we go against His will all the time? Would that not make God perpetually unhappy, always not at peace and constantly in bad shape? Would God not have destroyed the whole world out of anger? To my mind, God does not get angry. He is above anger and all other negative tendencies of humans. God is love. He is peace. He is compassion. Anger has no place where love, peace and compassion reside. God knows our feelings even before we express them. He had known beforehand how we would behave before he created us, so He is not surprised or angry at our bad ways. On the contrary, He overlooks our iniquities, and grants us ample opportunities to repent and fall back in line. I strongly believe that the notion that God gets angry is a carry-over idea from the times of the worship of small gods. In truth, the gods were (and still are) angry gods, who had little or no room for forgiving or overlooking the trespasses of their adherents and others living within their domains. The gods were/are mere super-humans, not God. God Himself is a perfect God, who is not subject to any negative feelings or tendencies. To say, therefore, that God gets angry is to commit blasphemy. God is never angry!
