Free Will and Human's Unpredictability
By Lateef Oladeji
A few 'theories' have been suggested for the unpredictable and untrustworthy nature of man, compared with animals. One of such advances our higher level of intelligence or mental capability for the observation. I don't think I agree to this opinion. Rather, I think it is the 'free will' theory that accounts for the observation, if truly that theory holds. God did not give animals free will. That is why animals behave like angels, not going against what God has designed for them. The animals that are savage or violent are known for that, and they behave to type without any pretence. The friendly ones do not turn violent all of a sudden unless there are certain predictable reasons such as hunger. However, the humans' free will factor makes him behave unpredictably. As I see it, therefore, the unpredictable behaviours resulting from free will make humans untrustworthy, not their higher mental capability. Afterall, the angels have greater mental capacity, and yet they are not unpredictable or untrustworthy.
