Enhancing World Peace Through Respect for the Right to Secede

The right to self-determination is an important element of the fundamental human rights that nations all over the world claim to subscribe to and hold sacred, especially within the framework of the United Nations Organization’s (UNO’s) Charter. The wisdom in this stance stems from the lessons of the world wars, which indeed informed the formation of the world body in 1945.

Unfortunately, human beings have short memories or none at all, as it’s evidenced from worldwide disrespect for groups’ and nations’ right to independent existence. Struggles for self-determination and/or justice are long and unending, as exemplified by deathly agitations by the IRA of Ireland, the Tibetans of China, the Biafrans and the Niger-Deltans of Nigeria, the Palestinians of the Middle East, in a way, and a host of others held in bondage against their will, or somehow marginalized, all over the world.

What is happening now in Georgia gives one a genuine cause for concern. This Georgian case reminds me of a children’s storybook we read in our elementary school days. The book contained a chain of pictures formed by a hunter, a snake, a frog and a housefly. As the frog was about swallowing the housefly, the snake was on stand-by to swallow the frog while the hunter was on the ready to kill the snake.

That scenario perfectly depicts the current situation of things: the break-away nations or provinces of Georgia (Abkhazia and South Ossetia) are being oppressed by Georgia; Russia is now oppressing Georgia in retaliation; and the USA/NATO is threatening a backlash against Russia in sympathy with Georgia. AS the USA/NATO does not represent the rest of the world, it is only hoped that the chain will not get entangled and threaten world peace on a monumental scale once again.

By the way, must he who comes to equity not do so with clean hands? For Georgia to deserve the pity accorded her by the US and her allies, and for Russia to warrant the condemnation heaped on her for invading Georgia, must Georgia herself not respect the rights of her own breakaway nations and let them go and remain in peace? Georgia should do unto others what she wants done unto her. The same advice goes to those others who think that they can enjoy their peace while denying others their own. Water will find its level no matter what efforts are expended to change its course upstream, and the counter-efforts that would be made by water to obey the law of nature could be catastrophic.

We should give peace a chance by respecting the rights of others to associate or dissociate with whomsoever they like. Let there be unfettered secession if it is so desired by a group or nation. The secessionists of today may turn the amalgamators of tomorrow when they realize the beauty of and the strength in large numbers. The independent nations of Europe voluntarily decided to come together under one umbrella of the European Union for their own common good. Such a union is commonplace all over the world, but its attraction, strength and sustainability lie with the principles of voluntarity, equality, freedom and respect for members’ sovereignty which it upholds,

In the words of Albert Luthuli, let my people go!
